There was something strangely appropriate about conducting an interview with Danny Elfman at midnight.
He replied suitably for something that happened so long ago that, I really dont know.
Back in those days when I wrote a song it was just a whim.
He told me about it and I was like, Really?
I mean musically speaking, whats not to like?
Its just sounded really interesting.
No, it really wasnt.
[Laughs]
And they start to sing the song and he goes, STOP!
and shuts them up, so in fact they only do the first verse of the song.
I can only say this I wish they were all like this.
Well like with Tim, its different but its really, really similar.
So it comes down to the character and the intimacy… [Laughs] and I said, No, no were fine!
Its not an impediment, Im following her, shes there.
WithHitchcockhaving just been released, did they approach you to do the score because of your previous associations?
No, actually I really think it was more a desire in terms of… We maybe spoke three words about Bernard Herrmann.
It was pure luck.
So then Tim asked me to doPee Wees Big Adventureand I thought, Really?
I dont know about this.
So I realised Im going to need an orchestrator, who do I ask?
and he said, I took a class!
[Laughs] and so I said, Thats good enough, lets do this.
And all for the good as well!
Well, thank you!
It ended up working out well!
Im glad I didnt turn it down.
And so Steve just ended up staying with you throughout then?
Ive also read that when youve finished a score you dont tend to listen to it again…
If I can help it!
Yeah it was very weird.
Playing it back and listening to the originals and thinking, Oh!
Is that how I did that?
and even still I couldnt get myself to ever go back and listen to the whole first score.
So its really going back!
Well I look forward to that.
What actually inspired the decision to do the live performance over here?
and at the point I was like, Oh yeah, yeah, sure whatever.
When did that happen!?
What did I get myself into but itll be good.
Well Im looking forward to the concert either way!
Thank you, Ill do the best I can!
Danny Elfman thank you so much!
