The innovative stop-motion effects were (rightly) highly praised at the time.
1964 saw Troughton return to horror withThe Gorgonand later the same year he featured inThe Black Torment.
He was cast as Professor Wagstaff, an eccentric inventor with a time machine.
Troughtons final years were largely devoted to his TV work.
Patrick Troughton died on the 28th of March 1987 at aDoctor Whoconvention in America.
After ordering breakfast in his hotel room, he collapsed with a sudden and fatal heart attack.
He died in costume as the Doctor.
Troughtons death came just days after the announcement of Sylvester McCoy as the seventh Doctor.
