And for the last 45 years, hes been cutting a bloody path of carnage across multiplexes everywhere.

Only this time, they brought that kind of terror home to the suburbs.

Busta Rhymes in Halloween- Resurrection

This messy, incoherent jumble of slasher cliches commits the Cardinal Sin ofHalloween: It explainswhyMichael is evil.

And its explanation is ludicrously dumb.

He doesnt want to do it.Talk about defanging your monster.

Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie Halloween II

But hey look, theres a young Paul Rudd as an adult Tommy Doyle!

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

One step forward, and 39 steps back.

That seems to be the real curse of Michael Myers.

Danielle Harris as Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 5

TakeHalloween: Resurrection, for example.

Theres anotherHalloweenCardinal Sin you should never, ever break.

Youre not supposed to cheer for Michael, thats Jason or Freddys shtick.

Laurie and Corey in Halloween Ends

and then Hey Mikey, Happy Fucking Halloween!

Halloween II (2009)

There is a good movie buried somewhere inRob ZombiesHalloween II.

It follows Danielle Harristhe self-proclaimed Halloween Girlas Annie.

Michael Myers in Halloween Kills

Shes the first non-Strode relative to survive a Myers encounter.

That isnt the movie we get though.

Supposedly this is how she copes with the events of the last movie, but it doesnt take.

Malcolm McDowell in Halloween

Truthfully, the movies a mess with a lot of Zombies familiar ruthlessness, but little of his ingenuity.

So its just ugly.

It even squanders Malcolm McDowells initially intriguing deconstruction of Dr. Loomis, turning the character into a caricature.

Jamie LEe Curtis in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later

But isnt that damning with faint praise?

Donald Pleasence in Halloween 4

Still, wed takeHalloween 4over any Jason movie!

Meanwhile Ellie Cornell provides a serviceable stand-in for Curtis as the teen heroine and put-upon older sister.

Pity that the series didnt follow up on it.

Written by Carpenter and Hill, and directed by Rick Rosenthal,Halloween IIis clearly its predecessors offspring.

Still, it had a fitting ending to Michaels story if they had stopped here.

Even her adult daughter (Judy Greer) and granddaughter (Andi Matichak) keep her at arms length.

And the ending where all three generations of Strode women exact a terrible vengeance on Michael isso good.

The series couldve happily stopped thereand it probably should have.

Halloween (1978)

The original is of course still the best.

Where to begin, what to say about this movie that has not been said a thousand times before?

When one watchesHalloweennow, its always striking just how spare and almost elegant it is.
