The box office failure of Cutthroat Island put Hollywood off pirate-based movies for years.

Heres Tis look back at an oft-maligned film… (Oh, wait.

That was inPirates Of The Caribbeantoo).

After makingCliffhanger,Harlin was given carte blanche to do whatever he wanted.

Now, I like Geena Davis.

However, inCutthroat Island, she is lumped with some of the most awful and wooden dialogue ever written.

It also doesnt help that it appears she is reading most of it off dummy cards.

Its Frank Langella, however, that comes away from this film with his reputation intact.

He clearly realised what kind of film it was during production, and plays up the cheesy aspects.

Cue slo-mo explosions that would put Michael Bay to shame.

Another plus point is the films score by John Debney.

But do these points save the film?

Well, not really.

Is it a great film?

However, be warned that the UK DVD is cut in places.

Its quite frustrating, as certain secondary characters seem to suddenly die without you seeing it.

Its very strange to watch.

Still, hand on my heart, its better thanPirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End.
