Kevin Feige sees Marvel as an underdog.
He’s right, but is Deadpool & Wolverine an underdog movie?
Im much more comfortable being the underdog,Kevin Feigerecently toldEmpire.
If anyone has lost the right to call themselves an underdog, its got to be Feige, right?
Why in the world would he use that word to describe himself?
Well, you dont have to look much further than recentMarvel movie reviewsanddisappointing box office showingsto find the answer.
Sure, some dedicated fans will disagree, but Feige clearly knows and accepts the truth.
But, believe it or not, hes earned it.
After all, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with an indie film.
The 2008 movieIron Manmight have been distributed byParamount Pictures, but it was produced by Marvel Studios.
But the House of Mouse did not buy the House of Ideas until 2009.
To fund their first self-produced film, then Marvel Studios took a $525 million loan from Merrill Lynch.
For collateral, the company offered the full rights to several of its biggest characters, includingCaptain AmericaandBlack Panther.
In other words, they bet everything onIron Man.
And that wasnt the only gamble.
Obviously, it paid off.
Co-president of Marvel Studios Louis DEsposito agrees with Feiges position.
We took a little hit, were coming back strong.
Maybe when you do too much, you dilute yourself a little bit, DEsposito said, echoing Iger.
Were not going to do that anymore.
We learned our lesson.
Its nice to be able to rally behind one feature project this year, said Feige.
We do come along at an interesting time.
And we are decidedly something different.
Feiges saying the right things.
Feiges right about the underdog mentality.
That perspective allowed them to makeIron Maninto an engaging and exciting film.
