The Golden Throat of William Shatner, Recording Artist

Stroll through the multi-talented William Shatner’s storied musical career! Indeed, this album would be a science fiction voyage through the dark unknown all on its own. The entire album is very theatrical. William Shatner Performs Theme from Cyrano/Mr. WellsWar of the Worlds. Well, maybe I can get behind that. The entire album isnt full of lighthearted songs, nor does Shatner forfeit his interest in serious poetry. A fully spoken word track, What Have You Done?...

The top 50 underappreciated ZX Spectrum games

The humble Spectrum was home to some remarkable games - including these underappreciated masterpieces… I, like many, spend many years playing Spectrum games. However, a lot of lookbacks at the Spectrum era tend to focus on the big highlights. A good number of these are legally available via the emulation scene too. I cant recommend World Of Spectrum enough (link at the bottom) to explore these more. I lost more lives playingJet Set Willy....

Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco interview: The Croods

Kirk De Micco is no slouch either, having been with the project since its Aardman days. And the two of them spared us some time to chat about the movie. Heres how it went, starting off with just Chris… Then, he pretty much let you choose what you wanted to do next. But was it always the plan to go back toThe Croods? Was that always the plan? Every story, every movie has things about it that you get extremely attached to....

Continuum, Season 1: Review

At the last second, while trying to intervene, Kiera leaps with them. Disoriented and alone, Kiera immediately starts hunting down whichever members of Liber8 she can find. Carlos knows he cant completely trust her, but what is she supposed to do? Tell him shes from 2077 hunting down a group of futuristic terrorists? I doubt many people would buy that. Anyway, its fun watching Carlos bemused expressions when Kiera whips some little bit of intel out of nowhere....

Girls, Season 2: Review

So when I say up and down I mean it in the rollercoaster sense. Contrastingly, the finale itself went about as unabashedly upbeat as the shows ever attempted. The peaking and dipping has crafted an erratic tragicomedy tapestry that jigsaws together as a journey for the protagonists. I wouldnt definitely say that Season 2 was just plain better, but I found it more interesting. But then Season 1 was easily funnier....

Hawkeye Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon (Marvel) Review

Its sometimes hard for me to accept thatHawkeyeis one of the best superhero books on the market. This is as entry level as it gets for a character who has been around for almost fifty years. When you get down to it, Clint Barton really is kind of a lifer in the superhero business. As commonplace as all that sounds, its far more compelling than many of our usual superhero slugfests....

The hidden meanings of birds in the movies

Aliya looks at the symbolism behind our feathered friends in cinema… When Nelly Furtado sang she was like a bird, we all knew she meant it metaphorically. Film directors are no different. Lets start with the bigheads and work up. Eisenstein explored how symbolism can work through the interconnection of images inOctober. We make a connection between the two pictures: vanity. The peacock represents divinity, rank and power, while the colour white symbolises death in Chinese culture....

Looking back at Hudson Hawk

And, to paraphrase Farrelly, when they got something different, they slaughtered it. WithHudson Hawk, the initial box office was still pretty damning, though. A $75m blockbuster now, of course, seems like small change, and something of a novelty. And fuss there would be. So what is it instead? The basic outline came from its star, Bruce Willis. Furthermore, theres the small matter of Andie MacDowell. She was a late addition to the cast, joining a few days into production....

Looking back at BBC Two’s Neverwhere

Let me tell you a story. No, wait, ones not enough. Now, lets get this out of the way first: there is no single, true Neverwhere. Is there really an Earl at Earls Court? And how far down does Down Street go? Hardly a warrior, really. Shes the Lady Door, daughter of Portico, one of the head honchos of London Below. And then, as quickly as she came into it, shes out of his life....

Danny Elfman interview: Oz, Sam Raimi, Burton, Batman & more

There was something strangely appropriate about conducting an interview with Danny Elfman at midnight. He replied suitably for something that happened so long ago that, I really dont know. Back in those days when I wrote a song it was just a whim. He told me about it and I was like, Really? I mean musically speaking, whats not to like? Its just sounded really interesting. No, it really wasnt....

Interview With Wolverine and Saucer Country Writer, Paul Cornell

Paul Cornell has virtually done it all in the last couple of years. And were STILL leaving stuff out! Den of Geek (DoG):How did you land this gig writing Wolverine? Did Marvel approach you or did you pitch for it? Any difference in your approach to a more mainstream character like Wolverine, as opposed to something likeDemon Knights? So this is bigger, more bombastic, but its still all about character....

The 10 best Arnold Schwarzenegger performances

At the time of writing, its worldwide box office takings are a little over $33m. Especially when his co-star is Johnny Knoxville. And to be fairer, its actually a much better film than those numbers would suggest. Surprisingly violent, funny in places, hilariously cliched in others. But its not a great Arnie film. And its not a great Arnie performance. Too much emoting, not enough quotable dialogue. Give him the right material now and he could still be (step forward Tarantino....

Reincarnated, Review

In 1979, Jewish-born Bob Dylan reintroduced himself as a Christian with gospel albums like Slow Train Coming. How much does Snoop Lion actually understand Rastafarian culture? This is a documentary that certainly ends at the wrong point in its story. He is detached from the creative aspects of his own music. Reincarnatedplays best as a travelogue, instead of a doc that aims to challenge impressions of its subject. Heres hoping his upcoming country album Snoop Tractor will make for a better doc in 2014....
