Banshee, Season 1, Episode 2: The Rave, Review

Banshee chugs along and I am beginning to take a shine to it. The funny thing is that I have no idea why. No old COs calling in for recommendations or sending in maybe a picture from a precinct softball picnic. It just doesnt seem plausible. Still it has 10 episodes so I will give it 10 epsiodes. I know, I know, the Amish do not exactly scream excitement. For me the Amish peaked in modern entertainment with Harrison Fords 1985 flick Witness....

Do No Harm, Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot, Review

(Seriously, what is this, a Chanel ad spread inVogueor a one-hour TV drama?). I said it again with the clumsy costume choices. The overly used broken mirror metaphor (we get it dude. The character has a fractured personality. That shot was interesting when the first film was made and then it stopped being cool after that). The stereotypically pretty and boring actress casting choices. Ill say it again. Mrs. Cosby/Phylicia Rashad!...

Remembering Boris Karloff

If theres one classic movie star Id love to have met, its Boris Karloff. But there was a hell of a lot more to him than that. Unfortunately for me, though, Karloff died long before I was born. He passed away 44 years ago, at the age of 81. Obviously,Frankensteinis brilliant. Its beautifully shot, scary, and genuinely affecting. Frankensteinis so good that I want to say it hasnt dated, but thats clearly not true....

Downton Abbey Season 3, Episode 4: Review

If there were ever such a thing as a two-word recap/review, this would be the time for it. And Tapsell makes a lot of them. She insists Robert keep Dr. Clarkson on, if only as a formality. He agrees, just to keep the peace. Dr. Clarkson shows up, all uncomfortable and country doctor-ish, cringing as Tapsell drones on. Its so, sooo awkward. She and Branson have a brief argument about where they should raise the baby....

Reading Chris Ware’s Building Stories (Pantheon)

Chris Ware’s Building Stories is a remarkable graphic novel with a daring, unique format. Gerri Mahn unpacks, quite literally, this wonderful “object'” of a book. What can I say? Im a graphic novel snob. As a rule, Im more inclined to rereadSandmanor early issues ofThe Walking Dead. Never heard of Browns work? Are you old enough to know who Ronald Reagan is? What can I say? Did I love it?...

Dead Space 2 (Xbox 360), Review

With Dead Space 3 almost here, we plasma cut our way through the series in anticipation. Luckily, we manage to find help, though most of the tough stuff is still on our shoulders. Gameplay: While the graphics are improved and beautiful, it doesnt compare to the improvements in the gameplay. Dead Space 2 takes everything we loved about the original and amped it up. Either way, its all good. The score is beautiful, and the end credits instrumental song was absolutely perfect....

Uncanny Avengers #3 (Marvel) Review

It should make you a little angry. It should frighten you a little. All my lofty nonsense outlined above about superheroic ideals? None of that applies toUncanny Avengers#3. This is a comic book about evil. Lets not forget, as well, that the Red Skull is one of comics original supervillains. But nobody gives me the shivers like the Skull. Hes too close to the real thing.
