Exclusive: director Francis Lawrence on what went wrong with I Am Legend

A fascinating yet flawed movie, I Am Legend was ultimately let down by some uneven visual effects. We spoke to director Francis Lawrence about just what went wrong… The extraordinary overgrown New York landscape. Will Smiths lonely, haunted performance. Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevichs economical script which, for the first hour at least, is entirely convincing. I really wanted to do a movie that I could approach in a more organic way, Lawrence said....

Karl Urban interview: Priest, Judge Dredd, Bourne, Lord Of The Rings, genre movies and more

But hes nothing if not prepared. He was great inThe Chronicles Of RiddickandDoom, two movies that I thoroughly enjoyed, despite a critical panning. So, without further ado, well let the man himself tell you all about it… Well, I think the starting point was the fact that Black Hat is a fallen hero. Its always nice to have a bit of conflict to make a character more dynamic. Where does it slot into the cinematic tapestry for you?...

Music in the movies: Marco Beltrami

Mimic This is an incredibly interesting score, and one of the finest pieces Beltrami has composed. The highlight, for me, is the stunning vocal work onKroenens Lied. I, Robot Beltramis first attempt at a straight sci-fi score was for Alex ProyasI, Robot. Its an okay score for a blockbuster, but somewhat disappointing, knowing what hes capable of. Sure, it doesnt match GoldsmithsOmenscore, but then few do. As a piece of modern horror composing, though, its an effective piece of work....

Top 10 universes in need of an MMORPG

An online RPG based on the zombie movies of George Romero? Were talking television series, comic books, video games, and even, in this case, MMORPGs. Whats better than passively taking in a world? Why, actively joining into the world, of course. Thats why this list has been assembled. The zombie worlds outbreak steps would make for perfect level progression. Plus, theres always the military to deal with if you want a real challenge....

Doctor Who: is it time to bring back the Zygons?

I can still remember the moment Sarah Jane Smith and I encountered a Zygon for the very first time. As it lunged, Sarah Jane screamed and before you could say, Would you like a jelly baby? Its fair to say I was terrified, and the Zygons featured heavily in my nightmares that night. Well no, because they never did return. I never understood why, as surely I wasnt the only one clamouring for their return?...

Looking back at Laputa: Castle In The Sky

His trip to Wales provided a huge wellspring of inspiration. Then theres the flying island of the title, a place of startling mystery. Like the robots who tend its gardens, Laputa is both technically advanced and intertwined with nature. For anyone who hasnt yet seenCastle In The Sky, I wont spoil the films events in detail. The film may have reached its quarter century, but it still looks as fresh as ever....

The Man From Nowhere DVD review

The DVD cover ofThe Man From Nowhereis a little misleading. Only a single hand-cannon at a time for this wandering death-dealer. But of course, I wouldnt be so petty. The first half in particular is a sombre affair, lit in all manner of Michael Mann inspired blues. Cha doesnt even sport the same hairdo as that handsome hero on the cover. The scene in which he shaves off his shaggy bulbous mop is symbolic....

Will we ever see The Keep on Blu-ray?

Nobody does brooding cityscapes and saturated establishing shots like he can. (Manns original edit was three hours!) It also has a great score by prog synth masters, Tangerine Dream. In fact, music company Virgin and Paramount did. As you could see, legally this is messy. Heres a trailer for the film, complete with appropriate VHS scan lines…

The top 10 soldier-based videogames

If you werent gunning whilst you were running, you were no one in the videogame industry. The epitome of that genre wasCommando, a game that cast you as Super Joe. Not regular Joe, oh no, because that would be boring. Much like the Arnie film of the same name. And it was hilarious. A mix of tactics and action,Cannon Fodderwas a game that was well ahead of its time. Honestly though, its really not as depressing as Ive made it sound....

A shameless clone of E.T., or a nuanced film layered with meaning? Here, then, are ten alternate interpretations ofMac And Me. But where can one buy these quality items? Luc Besson interview: The Extraordinary Adventures Of Adèle Blanc-Sec, Leon, Taken 2, and more

I thought it was brilliant. I cant remember the last time I had so much fun in a cinema. Like this, you know? Mummies are 4,000 years old. So, theyre pretty smart, you know? They have so much knowledge. Ours take their tea and are polite. It was a lot of fun doing this one. Eight to twelve-year-olds, they love it too. Ive seen the film a few times with kids, and its so wonderful....

The 10 finest soundtracks in videogaming

It seems to be a much more focused affair, and more cinematic in style. This is a must-buy for fans of old-school videogame music. Being something of a score geek, the fact that Zimmer was the composer here was a major draw. This really is a brilliant effort by all involved. A five CD soundtrack is available, but will set you back the best part of 100. While I think the game is flawed yet quite enjoyable, McCrearys score is something special indeed....
