Eastern Promises Blu-ray review

That translation doesnt just raise Annas heckles, it also draws the attention of mob boss Semyon. One washroom scene in particular pulls no punches pretty much literally and isnt for the faint of heart. Still, theres a story to tell, and Cronenberg tells it expertly. Also, Armin Mueller-Stahl as Semyon puts in quality work, and deserves plaudits. Hopefully, theres a good role in there for Viggo again, too. The extras are lacking, though, with just two short featurettes to dig into....

Rambo review

Can Stallone pull off the same trick with the fourth Rambo film that he did with Rocky Balboa. No he can’t… Maybe hed resolve issues with charm and diplomacy, while leaving the bad guys stinging from his acerbic witticisms? Err…no…that wasnt an option was it? But alas, she doesnt. Hes also directed the film, and while a bit painting-by-numbers in its approach, its a workmanlike effort. Rating: 1 out of 5

Diary of the Dead review

Diary of the Dead is the fifth of Romero’s “of the Dead” movies. That makes it a … quintology? I like George Romero. This perhaps even makes him my favourite director. Hes also a genuinely lovely guy. That said, Im not such a blind fan that I like EVERYTHING hes done. See, I can tolerate bad films. What I really hate is incoherence. Lack of care and attention. Sadly, this is precisely whats wrong withDiary of the Dead....

The Den of Geek interview: Ira Newborn

He’s scored movies by John Hughes, John Landis and Kevin Smith. He’s the man behind the music from Police Squad! It was just about taking advantage of an opportunity that presented itself. Ad content continues below It seemed interesting and different and got me thinking about scoring. Its said many times that you rescued the film. Whats the story there? Is that because you didnt enjoy the comedy work, or was it a thirsting for tackling different genres?...

Cloverfield review (virtually spoiler-free!)

Sarah saw Cloverfield tonight. Surely not many people could really have believed thatThe Blair Witch Projectwas real. But it was a massively successful film nonetheless, imitated and parodied endlessly for years. And within the next couple of weeks, everyones going to find out whether the hype was justified. Theres not a lot to work out inCloverfield; it just is. But what it is, is brilliant. The only available escape route, across the Brooklyn Bride, is quickly cut off....

Mister B. Gone book review

Rob’s really not impressed with Clive Barker’s latest Oh dear. Now, dont get me wrong. This should have been an interesting concept. He is essentially a flimsy character whos difficult to relate to or empathise with. The character holds no real power to move the reader. Ad content continues below Why the book fails is that it doesnt have enough meat on its bones. It isnt horrific, fantastical or imaginative to merit being set alongside any of Barkers other works....

The Mighty Boosh season 3 episode 6 (The Chokes) review

Season 3 of the Boosh is over. Sad faces all round, particularly because, according to Rob, it went out with a whimper… If somebody could name any of these young cool dudes for me, it would be greatly appreciated. There is, however, one problem: Howard is probably the worst actor in the world. So what is there to like this week? Well, not very much at all, really. After last weeks comedy-packed party episode, this episode is really, well, a bit crap....

World Championship Poker 2 Xbox 360 review

Fancy a game of poker on your Xbox 360? Then, says Jenny, you should avoid World Championship Poker 2: All In at speed… I wanted to like this game. In fact I love poker. In fact I wanted to love this game. Games are better than this! BETTER THAN THIS!!! It starts, as mentioned above, with the music. Its like thePoker Nighton Five music on acid. There was one other thing I wrote in my notes: Tips are good....

The Den of Geek interview: Richard ‘Herr Flick’ Gibson

With coffee and cake.Richard Gibson spends many of his days as a professional writer. And presumably, you got the acting bug reasonably eerily? Blade Runner: The Final Cut review

It’s here, and Sean got to see it on a big screen. A VERY big screen. No, what I was left with was total bafflement as to what the hell happened to Harrison Ford. Remember when he was a star, when he was interesting? Remember when he was actually cool? Its been so long that Id forgotten myself. But what of the film itself? Of course,Blade Runners classic status is assured, and barely worth quibbling with now....

Close Encounters Ultimate Edition Blu-ray review

David takes it for a spin. And when that beard is in glorious high definition it just doesnt get any better. Or so I thought. And no, I dont mean Spielbergs beard. Spielberg tells of the budget limitations of the first. But thats not all. This is the first of Spielbergs many films to be released in high definition. On the evidence of this fantastic box-set Steven Spielberg will always be that wide-eyed child....
