Dano spoke with us about his first time writing comics and getting even deeper into the Riddlers head.
How much of your preparation for the role of the Riddler ended up on the page with this book?
The essence of it is there, and thats sort of why Im doing this.
The emotional essence of the comic was my backstory.
It didnt have a plot in the same way that this does.
How did you go from playing the Riddler onscreen to writing this comic about him?
We get along really well.
So in preparation, we talked a lot about Edward.
Its a disturbing story, and Edward is something of a pathetic figure in the first issue.
How do you balance that with his later villainy?
But now, Im not just playing a character; Im also a storyteller writing a comic.
So I do have to think about what this is.
Whats it like to be a genius, but nobody knows it?
This is a guy whos really struggling.
What was your collaboration with Stevan Subic like?
His art suits this world so well.
I cant wait for people to see his work because I really think hes got something.
Hes been just wonderful to work with.
This first issue was highly collaborative.
Then hed start doing the pencils, and Id keep writing the next thing.
Its been a really cool collaboration, and Ive learned a lot.
Thats been the really fun thing about this.
