It is also terrific.

Well that escalated quickly into something great, didnt it?

It was a strong episode that flirts, if even casually, with virtue.

It is what lets one self-centered alcoholic listen to anothers problems about a doomed professor.

And it is what makes tonights episode so much fun.

But theyre all making their lives better.

To start with Frankexcuse me, Francishis newfound spirituality is bound to last as long as his sobriety.

But it is also glorious.

This is the episode Macy will send to the Golden Globes Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Television Academy.

It should definitely be enough to secure another nomination too.

Plus, it allows the audienceand even Fionato cheer on Saint Francis.

Just dont get too attached, lest we end up like all the disappointed Gallagher children always do.

Speaking of the next generation of dysfunction, we saw a consolidation of effort and thus storytelling.

The threat of having your eyeball scooped out by a drug dealer has that effect.

Nevertheless, there were a few other side stories that all landed very well this week.

Yet it makesso much sensegiven what we know about dear old Kevin.

And as Kev discovers hes Bart, V makes an unlikely reconciliation with Svetlana.

Even so, if I were Veronica, I would have just hired an accountant.

At least when you get screwed over then, youll get a receipt.

Hell, he and Lip bonded because they were both alcoholics.

The difference is the prof was functioning, but even that has his limits.

Now Lip is in an unusual position: caring for a father figure.

I suspect this storyline is not going to end happily.

Nor is he giving up the bottle at 60.

This is how we like them best, and that desperate creativity was a joy to revisit.

This also depicts an interesting new dynamic.

The Gallagher children, whom Fiona basically raised, now truly see Fi as a maternal presence.

Shes no longer part of the team.

(Their actual parents meanwhile got them into this drug-fueled dilemma.)

As aforementioned, this episode is all about the virtue of the self-serving.

Nay, it is about saving face and avoiding a lecture.

It is the epitome of I told you so.

Yes, actual shame onShameless.

However, not everything is an act of selfishness.

It is also in keeping with the better aspects of the show.

It is all vintageShamelessplayed to perfection.

And cheer, I did.

In fact, that pretty much sums up the whole episode.

We watched her die.

And then we put her in the ground.

We buried some drugs with her, but thats neither here nor there.

Ive been trying to be nice.

Ive been trying to be mature.

Ive been trying to rise above my station in life.
