Significant Other is a film about a couple on a camping trip with a secret sci-fi twist.
From Dusk Till Dawnis a film about some bank robbers who kidnap a pastor and his family.
Then about half an hour into it, you realize youre watching a completely different movie altogether.
Significant Otheris a very different film fromFrom Dusk Till Dawn, but its one that will similarly surprise audiences.
It is a movie that deliberately sets out to surprise.
The first of which is the title, which tells us this is a movie about a relationship.
But theres more to it than that.
And yet, at the same time, it implies that youre not married.
Not all the time, but thats part of it.
But when you view that title through a sci-fi lens, it puts something else into your head.
The real clue, Olsen says, is not just the title but the font.
The poster and publicity bring to mind extremely low-fi, almostBlair Witch Project-stylehorror, but theres more than that.
But the film is also really fun.
A Decent Proposal?
Except really, its about something else.
Except it reallyisabout a couple in the woods and their relationship.
For the directors, it was always intended to be a scary and unnerving scene.
What kind of maniac would do that?
This is the idea that Olsen and Berk got the most pushback on.
That was when we were like, This is a really interesting kernel to explore, Berk asks.
We started this not just with the marriage thing.
Its really just about living….can you live a life outside the rails that society sets for you?
Whose Film Is It Anyway?
Were playing with the idea of who the bad guy is, Olsen says.
In doing so,Significant Otherbreaks quite a few textbook filmmaking rules.
The gender of whatever executive youre talking to would make a big difference here, Olsen points out.
I feel seen by this, Berk adds.
Our agents convinced us to pitch it around and attempt to do it as a real movie.
Paramount was the partner that we ended up going with, and the rest is history.
Both directors felt a sense of relief at getting to film in the great outdoors.
We finished a day under schedule.
