Whether Lucas consciously realized it or not, toys gave young fans a means of engaging withStar Warslore.
Star Warswas quite unique as a film franchise that actively encouraged engagement from its fans.
By the timeReturn of the Jedicame out, kids had played with theirStar Warstoys for years.
Theyd already formulated an entire sequel toThe Empire Strikes Backin their heads.
Little wonder that what emerged in cinemas could never quite match up.
Beyond the toys, theres another fundamental reason for fans sense of ownership.
Again, viewed like this, its unsurprising that fans didnt always take kindly to Lucas tinkering withStar Warshistory.
Then came the Prequel Trilogy.
For all but the most ardent detractors, even the bleaker moments in theStar Warsfranchise have their good points.
Besides,Star Warsfans arent some hive mind, as the anecdote from the top of this piece underlines.
We accept the sounds of pew-pew lasers in the vacuum of space because its a fairy tale.
We may grouse and complain, but secretly, the frustration and anger is all part of theStar Warsadventure.
