Fancy watching something a bit different this Halloween?
Looking back now and trying to make sense of it all can be difficult.

This is part of why these movies hold so much fascination.
These guys were operating without rules but, Christ, they had talent.
Not an easy watch but a powerful film even some 25 years later.
He totally went for broke.
Theres almost no atrocity left behind.
The dubbing is dreadful.
Its not particularly well made by comparison to most others on this list.
But man, this is harrowing stuff.
On account of said loose grasp, the film itself is at times very cryptic too.
If youre looking for something on the artier side of giallo, this is the one.
This may not be the best giallo but its almost certainly the most quintessential.
If you were playing Giallo Bingo, youd get a Casa Completo!
When a government project named Operation Sweet Death (nothing sinister here!)
goes wrong, an eco-terrorist warns us you will all die!
You will die and be eaten!
First they will kill you!
thus synopsising the rest of the film.
Its shot in Europe but set in New Guinea.
He also includes footage of starving natives eating maggots from their dead, which is in horrendously poor taste.
He steals Goblins score directly fromDawn Of The Dead(they never gave permission).
Its very gory and the cheap and dirty aesthetic gives it a disturbing edge.
The cast are good value too.
Franco Garofolos performance as a SWAT commando who slowly loses his mind is brilliant.
This isnt high art, I know, but its good friendly violent fun nonetheless.
); and some killer cyborgs.
Throw in a drag race with missile launchers and honestly?
Catherine Deneuve plays the aunt and has scarcely been more mesmerising.
A menacing yet moving film that really deserves to be up there with the greats.
When the boat reaches the harbour, its empty.
From the guts out.
Often replayed in slow motion.
If the guys behind movies likePorno Holocaustare saying that, you know youre in for something special!
For the most part though,Anthropophagustakes its time.
The island feels genuinely eerie.
As slashers go, this is one of the weirdest, spookiest and darkest.
Franco Nero (the original Django!)
and Corinne Clery (fromMoonraker) play a dysfunctional middle-age couple who pick up a hitch-hiker.
A harsh film but one of exceptional quality.
This is a well written, intelligent and great looking movie all round.
But even if you (somehow!)
The brain-blistering score by Goblin is one of their best too.
Not an easy watch if youve a weak stomach but a very special, unique feature nevertheless.
The Night Child (1975) (aka Perche?!)

The original Italian title (translated as simply WHY?!)
is the howl of pain at the centre of this very dark, yet subtle chiller.
Rita Calderoni, as his long-suffering wife, is genuinely great.
She matches Hargitays hysterics but gives the film a depth and class that it maybe doesnt deserve.
Whichever one you watch though,Delirio Caldois a filthy dirty classic.
The simmering atmosphere is underpinned by a sumptuous Bruno Nicolai score and impeccable performances from the three leads.
Like a Roman tribute to the classic southern melodramas, this is a masterpiece.
It just keeps on giving.
Theres very little plot and even less that makes easy sense.
Like all his films from the era,The Beyondaddresses his anxieties about mortality.
No matter what anyone does inThe Beyond, death is inevitable.
Shot in the brownish colours of decay,The Beyondis single-mindedly bleak.
The recovered footage showing how they met such a grim end is far more devastating than anyone expected…
Photography and editing throughoutCannibal Holocaustis stunningly inventive.
Gianfranco Clericis screenplay is fast, sharp and savage.
That makes it real.
That makes it mean something and makes it bruise.
The ultimate Italian exploitation film.
