Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Cast

But even the most traditional Trekkie can appreciate its best major additions to franchise lore.

Another reboot, another prequel.

Sure,Strange New Worldshas been wonderful, but thats the exception.

Too much of newTrekis focused on the era ofThe Original Series, ignoring anything afterStar Trek: NemesisuntilLower DecksandPicard.

But no series has embraced this principle likeDiscovery.

Discoveryfeatures the first Black female main character, who eventually becomes the Captain of theDiscoveryin season three.

Discoveryalso featured a crew that went far beyond humans.

Kelpiens

Discoverygave viewers one of the most compelling alien races in the Kelpiens.

The Breengained their power from the mystery they presented.

InDiscoverys final season, the Breen removed their helmets to show their faces for the first time.

They also revealed their rigid political system.

That episode introduced the Progenitors, a species only hinted at as the Preservers inThe Original Series.

Portrayed by Chelah Horsdal, President Rillak is part human, just like so many characters inStar Trek.

In 2009,Bruce Greenwoodplayed a fatherly, but distant version of Pike in the reboot movies.

Strange New Worldshas been an unequivocal delight, at once honoringTreks past while pushing its ideas forward.

And it would not have happened withoutDiscovery.

That changed inDiscoverys second season, which dealt with an evil AI called Control.

Personal Transporters

Most Trekkies know that beaming was an invention born of necessity.

Discoveryupped that tech by introducing personal transporters.

With personal transporters, characters can go to any location just by touching their com badges.

Plus, we still havent seen how ion storms or orchids mess with personal transporters.

Star Trek: Discovery is now streaming on Paramount+.
