The Dark Knight has tons of iconic lines.
But the most important line baffled Batman and Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan.
Within weeks of its release in the summer of 2008,The Dark Knightcemented its place in popular culture.
Obviously,The Dark Knightmeans a lot to everyone who sees it.
Well, almost everyone.
My brother [co-screenwriterJonathan] wrote it.
The line in question: You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain.
It kills me, because its the line that most resonates.
And at the time, I didnt even understand it, confessed Nolan.
Is that really a thing?'
However, it more likely points to his faith in his brother as a writer.
For as much as he creates giant blockbuster films, Nolan has always taken a family approach to filmmaking.
In addition to his brother Jonathan, Nolan also works closely with his wife and producer Emma Thomas.
He loves to use the same actors again and again, including Michael Cain and Cillian Murphy.
In this story, its absolutely that.
Build them up, tear them down.
Its the way we treat people.
Is Nolan overthinking things?
Is he making claims that a superhero movie cant really back up?
Maybe, to which we can only respond with another iconic line from the movie: Why so serious?
