We’re tracking down every Marvel reference and Easter egg in The Defenders.

Fire up Netflix and help us out!

This article contains nothing but major spoilers forMarvels The Defenders.

So I have to say, Im a little surprised byThe Defenders.

That squad included Doctor Strange (yep), Namor (what?

), the Hulk (for real?!?

), and the Silver Surfer (no, were not messing with you).

Shaft is a member of Sticks anti-Hand group, The Chaste.

Ive been to that impound lot on 49th that they threatened Trish with.

Its an absolute nightmare.

Dont get towed in NYC.

Or even in the MCU in general?

Claire compliments Mistys outfit.

Well never go all the way there, though.

Is that Gichin FunakoshisKarate-Dobook laying by Danny on the floor of the dojo in this episode?

Hard to imagine anyone else now, aint it you dummies?

Im drawing a blank on both Elmores bar and Trouble in Para-Dice as far as Marvel history goes.

Can anyone help me out?

Are these super deep cuts from early Luke Cage comics?

OK, this might be the nerdiest thing I end up writing for this entire guide.

And thats not all!

That building is the basis/exterior shots for Lois Lanes apartment in 1978sSuperman: The Movie.

Go check it out yourself when youre in the city!

I could totally here Reeves delivering a line like that just like Colter does here.

Wait, I should back up…

So, Luke Cage and Danny Rand are destined to become best pals, and even partners.

In the comics, they shared titles likePower Man and Iron FistandHeroes for Hire.

Theyre just off on the wrong foot here, thats all.

Dont @ me, I dont make the rules.

Ive come up blank on all of them in terms of Marvel references.

like correct me if you have sharper eyes than I do!

Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones have an interesting friendship in the comics.

The Defenders Episode 3: Worst Behavior

Elektras secrets are revealed.

Danny changes his tactics.

Matt gives Jessica some legal advice.

Luke searches for the White Hat.

The Elektra rebirth sequence is chilling, but the very best part is her emergence from the coffin.

If you look closely youll see that Jessica Jones has a bullet hole in her scarf.

Thats a hilarious detail.

I cant remember where that came from, though.

The Defendersgets its Stan Lee cameo out of the way early this time.

Also, that whole following sequence has a really great score.

No proper costume yet, butFinn Jones told us hes open to it!

This episode definitely has what I would consider Danny Rands best action sequence since he was introduced.

This episode gives the impression of extra light on Marvel references, other than the return ofDaredevilvillain Nobu.

Lets talk about all of the different names Alexandra has apparently used through history.

I think the fight in the Royal Dragon might actually be cooler than the hallway fight from episode 3.

When Luke gets hit by a truck, did anyone else get a serious Looney Tunes/Wile E. Coyote vibe?

Im so certain of thisthat I wrote an entire article about it!

Has anyone in The Hand identified what the substance is that grants them immortality?

We do get some more clues about Alexandra here, though.

She apparently isnt just the leader of The Hand, shes the founder!

Is her daughter significant?

Is any of this helping these clues come together?

Like Alexandra, Im not sure if Sowande is actually a stand-in/pseudonym for another Marvel villain.

He apparently took out The Chaste, though, so thats pretty badass!

Is it my imagination, or does the Daredevil suit look way better than it did inDaredevilSeason 2?

It seems more flexible and less awkward.

Speaking of which, can anybody help me identify what the paintings are in Hand HQ there?

I bet they have considerable significance.

For one thing, these fights are so much better staged than what we got onIron Fist.

For another, it’s possible for you to see the differences in their styles more clearly.

Matt is definitely more of a brawler, which calls back to his Dads boxing influence.

I love Alexandras subtle reaction when Madame Gao says this is what mortality looks like.

Sigourney Weaver absolutely rules.

Luke is readingTheNew York Bulletinwhile guarding Danny.

Damn it, guys, doesnt anybody readThe Daily Buglein this town?

will get the circulation up.

Its the only way to adequately explain its absence.

Elektra leading the hand?

Yeah, that has definitely happened in the comics before.

Colleen and Claire debate heroism.

Elektra tries to recruit an all-important ally.

Any idea who it is?

Because its pretty cool.

Dudes arms are for real.

I like that Foggy is acutely aware of the danger of Matts identity being revealed under investigation.

Like,allof the times.

Its only a matter of time until it happens on Netflix.

Foggys crack about Jessica being Super Joan Jett is the greatest thing.

You…you do know who Joan Jett is, right?

I dont have to explain that to you?

If any of you know, just tell me!

Might make sense for why theres a dragon entombed here?

Wed all be dead if that had to happen.

Its an absolute disaster these days.

Jessica jokes that Were not alone is an MJ deep cut.

Shes actually referring to You Are Not Alone by Michael Jackson.

That has nothing to do with Marvel.

Thats…pretty cool.

Jessicas this will all be easier once theyre gone crack sounds like famous last words.

Again, the MCUs Superman isnt Captain America, its Luke Cage.

I love that Madame Gao refers to Jessica as the unyielding woman.

I expect that on t-shirts and tattoos by next week.

When Danny and Madame Gao are about to fight she briefly adopts something that looks like a crane stance.

A nice reminder that shes essentially this shows Crane Mother.

Thats Protect Ya Neck by the Wu-Tang Clan playing during the big fight scene.

You never know, right?

Misty Knight loses her arm, something that was teased with an injury onLuke Cagebut didnt end up happening.

When next we see her, shes going to have a state-of-the-art bionic arm.

The comic book version of how that happened is different, andtheres a great article on it here.

Linda Carter (no, not Wonder Woman) is the original Night Nurse.

Remember when we all thought Claire was Night Nurse?

But wait, theres more!

Theres a Dr. E. Wirtham on there.

That would be Elias Wirtham, known by his antihero/kinda supervillain name Cardiac.

Hes a Spider-Man supporting character, so read into that what you will.

And thats not all!

Doctors who are supposed to follow up on Misty are Dr. Tony Isabella and Dr. Arvell Jones.

Those are Mistys creators.

But wait, were not done!

See the numbers up top?

P03-12 is a reference to Mistys first appearance, which was inMarvel Premiere#21.

I think someone just reversed those numbers.

It came out in 1975, hence the 555-1975.

This is the first time Jessicas door has been intact since the opening moments ofJessica JonesSeason 1.

Danny is clearly inspired by Matts sacrifice, and is looking out over the city like hes Daredevil.

Nishlesh pointed out that Danny is wearing a tracksuit here, and thats kind of significant.

The current Iron Fist costume in the comics resembles a tracksuit…

I dont think well ever get that high collar, though.

Its for the best.

The nuns are told to get Maggie while Matt is bedridden.

Sister Maggie is…well…thats a huge, huge spoiler forDaredevilSeason 3.
