To control every aspect of the frame, and what goes in it.

Yet, the journey the other way around is increasingly common.

Its hard not to see the appeal, too.

Live action is generally a quicker way to get a film on the screen.

However, great films from animation directors arent that common.

Here are eleven directors who took the chance, and how they got on… Stanton cut his teeth on short films, before co-directing Pixars second effort,A Bugs Life.

And, as it turned out, it did for Stanton too.

Hes done the live action jump, having finished production onJohn Carter Of Mars.

John Carter Of Marsarrives in 2012.

BRAD BIRD

Its not just Andrew Stanton amongst Pixars finest whos trying live action.

Youd hope that, having hired him, Paramount will give him the necessary space he needs.

The signs are promising.

From there, Minkoff mixed live action with some animated work in the first twoStuart Littlemovies.

(The second of which is really quite good.

Certainly stronger than the tepid original).

Minkoff currently has in production a comedy crime caper,Flypaper, due out at some point next year.

Which makes Adamsons next choice of project quite intriguing.

Heres hoping, because, as the firstShrekproved, hes quite a talent.

From there, though, she moved on to a romantic comedy by the name ofPost Grad.

It actually came out around a year ago, although it didnt do too much business.

But it was his pair of short films,VincentandFrankenweenie(the original live action version!

), that got him noticed.

He then directedThe Corpse Bride.

KEVIN LIMA

Kevin Lima might just have been the right director at Disney at the wrong time.

At is was, it did well, but the computer animation revolution was taking hold.

Lima, however, stayed close to Disney, directing the decent enough102 Dalmatianslive action sequel for the studio.

It did it by running riot with its imagine, steered by Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

The pair are staying together, too, for their big live action movie debut.

The big screen remake of21 Jump Street, which is currently in pre-production ahead of a 2012 release.

Theyre are now also linked withBob The Musical, for Disney.

He was also on scripting duties forThe Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

And in Kirkpatricks defence,Imagine Thatis a fairly decent movie.

It just got trampled in the box office poison that is Murphys current commercial pulling power.

Its also, again, an unusual movie to choose after working in animation.

Haywards next move, meanwhile, is unclear.
