Exclusive: Eli Roth reveals the idea that finally made his full-length Thanksgiving slasher movie possible.

Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving

If it actually came out in 1980, itd be a wonder if it didnt get the X-rating.

Roth likens the experience to film school.

But actually turning that into a feature stumped them draft after draft.

Thats not really a great way to go about writing a scary movie.

For more than a decade, theGrindhousetrailer felt as much like a trap as it did an opportunity.

It could be a 2023 movie with 2023 concerns.

It could even have different kills.

And what if I come up with something thats more sick, more twisted, and more crazy?

(The name has since been changed.)

The smile returns to the directors eyes.

He came over on theMayflowerand was the first Governor of New Plymouth Colony.

As the director concedes, sometimes historys handing you a gift.

Its an amusingly perverse idea which added to the films entire backstory.

So theres a bunch of masks lying around.

They cant give them away.

Everyone in town has a John Carver mask, so its literally a mask anyone can get.

Which means the killer can be anyone, at least in Plymouth.

Right betweenHalloweenandSilent Night, Deadly Nightwould beThanksgiving, he says.

A murderers row for the whole season.
