The new Star Trek movie announcement continues a troubling trend for the franchise.

We all have our opinions about the best captain or the general ethos of the show.
Its right there at the start of the show!
First we gotStar Trek: Enterprisein 2001, then theJ.J.
Abramsreboot in 2009, thenDiscoveryin 2017, and again with the spin-offStrange New Worlds.
Of course, that raises a few major questions.
Origin of what, exactly?
Up until that point, both the Kelvin and Prime timelines shared the same history.
All of these continuity questions aside, theres a bigger one: why isTrekobsessed with moving backwards?
And specifically, backwards to theTOSera and before?
But why mustTrekhave this much familiarity at all?
As the hit podcastGreatest Trekso often says, Star Trekis a place.
But at the end of the day, thats not why we loveStar Trek.
We loveStar Trekbecause of its ability to explore complex ideas and themes through the lens of space adventure.
We loveStar Trekbecause it boldly goes where no one has gone before.
Its time for new entries, movies or TV shows, to do the same.
