A true classic of genre television, The Twilight Zone arrives on DVD.
Heres Phils review of the first series from 1959…
Even if youve never seen an episode ofThe Twilight Zone, it may feel as though you have.
It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity.
This is the dimension of imagination.
It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone.
Sometimes theyre comedies, sometimes theyre dramas.
Frequently theyre psychological horror.
(Its a story that includes one of the biggest doh!
moments of any finale to be found in season 1.)
A new American identity was emerging, but many were as yet unsure of what that identity would be.
But in case Im giving the impression its all doom and gloom, be assured that it isnt.
Most ofThe Twilight Zoneepisodes in season 1 are highly entertaining, with some excellent comedic episodes.
So,The Twilight Zoneis a TV series wed very much to the cinema of the era.
What it can produce in terms of novelty and ingenuity has barely been scratched.
We want to prove that television, even in its half-hour form, can be both commercial and worthwhile.
The horizons of what it can do and where it can go stretch out beyond vision.
WithThe Twilight Zonehe went a long way to achieving much of that vision.
There are, however, interviews in lieu of commentaries, and some of these work much better.
