The success of Transformers 4 and Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie is having an unpleasant side effect…
This weekend just gone saw two critically-reviled movies top the box office charts of the US and the UK.
And thats just in America.
The film has hit $300m worldwide, and it lands in British cinemas this weekend.
It might find unexpected competition, however.

Firstly then, its best I make my own position clear.
I dont like theTransformersfilms.
Give meThe RockandArmageddon, however, and Im happy.
Ive watched the TV show.
A real eye opener).
Because Im not ultimately sure that it is.
This was best summed up by a lovely comment which was posted on theMrs Browns Boysbox office report article.
Theres little worse than being mocked for watching something you enjoy by people who feel theyre superior.
And its hard not to see the point.
Yet thats clearly not the case.
Lets take them again in turn.
It was 64% male, and only 42% were 25 or under.
Thats grown-ups, then, making a decision to see a film that they want to see.
People who enjoy them.
It took $1.1bn at the global box office, and isthe seventh biggest film of all time.
Does that depress me personally?
I think its a horrible film.
But then its not up to me.
Furthermore, who am I to judge?
Even the most vigorous haters ofTransformersmovies cant knock the fact that they get people into cinemas.
I am in the minority onTransformersfilms, and so be it.
Else why did everyone bother warning the world offBatman & Robin, and encourage everyone to seeBatman Begins?
Lets, then, move on toMrs Browns Boys DMovie.
Just to put its 4.3m take into context first.
Its not far offFrozens opening weekend in the UK either Disneys juggernaut started with 4.7m.
As it was, there was more disbelief and derision when that 4.3m number was revealed.
And I get that.
I get that better comedies have come and gone without making anywhere near that dent.
Quite the contrary, in fact.
That has not been outlawed in this country.
Both though have taken their critical battering, and both have prevailed, earning sizeable audiences.
