Sweeney first heard ofImmaculatemany years ago, when she was just 16 years old.

And then I found out that they never made it.

And every year, I followed up with my team asking, Did they ever make that movieImmaculate?

Whatever happened to it?

The story actually goes back to her childhood.

My dad had me grow up watching all the OG John Carpenter films:Halloween,The Thing.

I was watchingPsycho,The Shining.

As the scenes grew very raw, she allowed the character to just feel every depth of her soul.

I have a phobia of needles, Sweeney reveals.

I usually just start crying and screaming and thrashing around.

I dont know how to describe it.

Since I was young, I was able to jump in and out of my characters, Sweeney adds.

And yet, she does like playing parts that reflect every day life.

In fact,Immaculatewasnt originally about a nun in a convent at all.

The religious setting came later.

Originally, the script was not set in a convent, she wasnt a nun.

It was a boarding school, Sweeney reveals, while explaining how the script evolved to whats on screen.

So I look at it as this is just her own characters journey.

And she happens to have her journey with God.

And thats something she plans to continue going forward.

So, what kind of project would Sweeney like to make next?

Ive been loving going from romantic comedies withAnyone but Youand now [Immaculate].

One thing that is clear is that Sweeney is proud to have championedImmaculateand Cecilias crazy rollercoaster journey.

Immaculate premiered at SXSW 2024 on March 12.

The film releases in theaters on March 22.
